Which Programs Are Configured for AutoRun?

AutoRuns is a great utility which packs a powerful punch! It shows you what programs are configured to run during system boot up or login. This is a nifty way to disable those annoying programs which start automatically – chat programs being notorious after installation. By disabling unwanted or unneeded programs at startup or login, Windows will start faster, and you’ll free up some memory.

The GUI interface shows a lot of information, including applications which run at both startup – HKey Local Machine, and for each individual user logging on: HKey Current User, so best to check both areas. From here, you can simply uncheck any programs you would like to disable from starting automatically. A word of caution: be careful when messing with the Windows Registry, and consider a backup first if you are unfamiliar with the Registry. QuickTime and Adobe are two software vendors which have a nasty habit of auto starting their programs, in addition Malware creators – so if your computer is acting weird, view the startup programs.

AutoRuns was created by SysInternals, famous for creating small and very useful utilities, and has since been purchased by Microsoft.
