How to Encrypt Data Using TrueCrypt

TrueCrypt is a free and open source encryption software. With minimal effort, you can quickly configure TrueCrypt to encrypt your data. Why should you configure your data? Well, if there is data residing on your laptop, computer, external drives, internal drives, or USB device which is of a sensitive nature, it’s likely a good idea to have some form of encryption. USB drives are easy to lose, and stolen computer hardware is not an uncommon occurrence. Just think what data resides on your home computer: chances are you have your electronic tax returns with your social security number.

TrueCrypt offers three options for encryption: 1) Creating a virtual encrypted disk within a file 2) Encrypt a non-system partition entire external or secondary drive, entire USB drive 3) Encrypt a system partition or system drive where Windows is installed, resulting in a password entry before Windows starts.

Option 1 is the easiest of the three, and it’s the one recommended for inexperienced users which is explained during my video tutorial.

One word of caution: While a strong password is highly recommended with TrueCrypt, ensure it’s a password you will NEVER forget. Otherwise, any data you have encrypted is gone for good.
