It is estimated that one person in every ten in the United States and Canada has unclaimed property, including bank assets, insurance refunds, and dividends – just to name a few. After hearing about a friend who discovered unclaimed property held by the state of California, I decided to check this out. Sure enough, the State of California holds unclaimed assets AND allows you to file a free claim.

Sound too good to be true? Well, not only have I claimed $110 for dividends I wasn’t aware I had, one co-worker of mine discovered $1300 in her name, and nearly $200 for her dad. Other co-workers claimed amounts varying from $40 to $300. My HR department, after hearing about this, asked me to write an article for our employee newsletter to spread the word.

I decided to check if other states have similar programs. Good news! Most, if not all, do. I pulled together a list with links to each state’s unclaimed property site, or the state’s treasury department. I also located similar sites for a number of provinces for our Canadian friends. My apologies for not providing additional information on other countries – doing so would become a full-time job

One more thing: This is a free service. Do not be tricked by websites offering to claim this money for you – they will charge you a fee!
