Where’s Simon?

After little activity on the Hot Buttered IT site this summer, I can now poke my head out and squint at the sun, and lather on lots of sunscreen, and say “hi” to everyone!.

So, why so little new content on Hot Butter? I’ve been working diligently on another site which has been using what little free time I can find. My new website, SimonSezIT.com, is a subscriptions based online training site offering quality training at truly affordable prices. How affordable? Currently there are 3 Office 2007 courses (Excel 2007, Word 2007, and PowerPoint 2007) available for only $12 for a single month. A year subscription is only $70 and includes access to all future courses released, including an upcoming release of Outlook due in September, and Vista in fall 2008. You can try a number of the videos for free, and you can also checkout the free tips at Simon Sez IT Tips (using another Wordpress blog), in addition to a new podcast. If you discover that this is something of value, Hot Buttered IT  readers and listeners can get an additional 40% off any subscription through the end of September 2008. Just enter code A204 at checkout.

So, what becomes of Hot Buttered IT? Well, it is still a labor of love. The podcast will no longer occur due to the large amount of time it takes to prepare and produce (I had no idea!). I will be doing a new and shorter podcast at SimonSezIT.com, however, it is really catered for a less tech savvy audience, and it will be less than 10 minutes so I can focus my energy on the day-to-day site management of Simon Sez IT.

I will continue to upload videos and post material at Hot Buttered, but less frequently. One area I was never able to explore and share with everyone was Linux. This is an area which has some great potential, and in addition to a great need. I love Linux, and have a great passion for it, and will continue to support the community. Simon Sez IT is meant to address a community with other needs and let’s be honest, Microsoft Office is not going to be replaced anytime soon, especially in the “enterprise”. But, let’s continue to convert as many Windows and Mac users to Linux and the open source community!

Thanks for all of your support at Hot Buttered IT, and looking forward to staying in touch!

Use RegMon to Monitor Your Registry Activity

RegMon is a superb real-time Registry monitoring tool which lists what applications are accessing the Windows Registry, in addition to which keys they are accessing, and what data is being read or written to.
Why is this important? Well, for starters, if you suspect some Malware is residing on your computer, this is one way to view what’s occurring at a granular level. [Read more →]

Which Programs Are Configured for AutoRun?

AutoRuns is a great utility which packs a powerful punch! It shows you what programs are configured to run during system boot up or login. This is a nifty way to disable those annoying programs which start automatically – chat programs being notorious after installation. By disabling unwanted or unneeded programs at startup or login, Windows will start faster, and you’ll free up some memory. [Read more →]
